Helio Santos

Back to main

Helio Santos (b. 1984, Colima, Mexico) is a Mexican artist, professor, and researcher whose practice intersects painting, data, internet culture, and emerging technologies. Originally trained as a painter and digital artist, Santos now works with creative coding, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. He uses the landscape—both natural and urban—not only as a subject but as a conceptual vehicle to explore the complex dynamics between humans, nature, and machines. For him, technology is not merely a tool but an extension of the body and intellect, a philosophy that shapes both the process and meaning of his work. Over more than a decade, Santos has developed a body of work where the landscape is not merely a visual motif but a platform for reflecting on the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, the human and the machinic, the visible and the absent. His artistic approach focuses on reprogramming machine vision to contemplate rather than control. Santos creates algorithmic systems capable of generating and reinterpreting landscapes, often transforming surveillance and data extraction tools into creative agents. Through this, he challenges the instrumentalization of technology and invites viewers to reconsider the ways perception, ideology, and ecology are encoded in the digital image. His recent research also addresses how artificial intelligence can cultivate ecological awareness instead of reinforcing extractive or techno-optimistic narratives. Santos’s hybrid practice includes physical outputs, such as oil paintings executed through custom-built CNC plotters and robotic drawing systems, as well as digital and on-chain works. His projects have been exhibited worldwide in cities including Paris, New York, London, Lisbon, Seoul, Tokyo, Mexico City, Copenhagen, Buenos Aires, Rome, Zurich, Amsterdam, and Barcelona. His work has been acquired by private collectors internationally. Recent exhibitions include the solo shows Meta-scapes at Colonna Contemporary (Philadelphia, 2025) and Al aire libre at Tech Contemporary Gallery (Copenhagen, 2024), curated by OBJKT. He has also participated in notable group exhibitions such as Visual Detachment (Fakewhale × Verse, 2025), Drifting Landscapes (Wintercircus Arena, Ghent, 2025), Screensavers (UNCOMMON Gallery, Seoul, 2024), and Echoes of Life — Memories of Fragile Ecosystems (Institute of Fine Arts, Cali, 2024). His work has also been featured in public digital displays across Belgium, Romania, Amsterdam, Indonesia, and Australia. In addition to his artistic practice, Santos is a professor and researcher in visual arts and regularly presents his investigations on AI and algorithmic creativity at academic and cultural forums. His career includes residencies in Iceland and Mexico and participation in events such as FILE (Brazil) and ISEA.
